Diamonds
I have to share this info with everyone who loves diamonds. In September 2008, Richard Burke and wife Carol visited the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas. Lucky Mr. Burke found an unusual 4.68 carat diamond, which he named "Sweet Caroline". The Park Website lists 30 finds for the month of September, 2011. All of the most valuable finds seem to have been claimed by residents of Texas. Two stones almost a full carat in size and another about 3/4 carat were found on different days, as was one of the more rarer Yellow Diamonds, this one being about 1/3 carat in size. These were not the only finds claimed by Texans in September, so it certainly looks like these folks really know what they're doing out in the field. Also, Shore Gold mining corporation announced in March, 2011 the finding of an 11 carat diamond from mine samples recently taken. The diamond, found in Central Saskatchewan, Ontario is valued at about $180,000, which is probably what helped to boost their share value 17%.
Gold
By now, most serious prospectors and treasure hunters have heard about a certain geologist (35 years experience), that just happens to
live in Gold country (California), that just happens to own property in an old mining district, that just happened to decide to go metal detecting on said property, that just happened to find an 8
pound nugget... well, it sold (2011) at Auction for $400,000. You see... with a lot of patience and a good upbringing and a litle luck... you never know!
This was certainly a one in a billion shot. Those odds will be greatly reduced as more geologists rain down on the area of the find and develop models of the geology near Washington, CA.
The odds are much better at Ganes Creek, Alaska. Last year, a fellow
named Tom who regularly visits Ganes Creek, took home a beautiful 10.64 ounce nugget. Believe it or not, 20 to 30 nuggets a week are
being found there using metal detectors. What would a 10 oz. nugget go for at today's prices?
